One of the most common questions buyers ask is: which mesh size of silica sand do I actually need? Choosing the wrong grade can affect everything from the strength of your concrete to the clarity of your glass. This guide explains what mesh size means and which grade suits each industry.

What does "mesh size" mean?

Mesh size refers to how fine or coarse the sand grains are. The number is based on a sieve — specifically, how many openings there are per linear inch of the screen the sand passes through. A higher mesh number means a finer grain, because the screen has more (and smaller) openings.

Silica sand grades are usually written as a range, such as 16/30 or 30/60. This means the grains pass through a 16-mesh screen but are held by a 30-mesh screen — so all the grains fall within that size band. A tight range like this gives you consistent, predictable material.

Quick reference: mesh size by application

Here is a simple guide to which grades typically suit which industries. Your exact requirement may vary, so it is always worth confirming with your supplier.

ApplicationTypical Grade / MeshWhy
Construction & drainageCoarse gravel, 4/8, 6/8Large particles for strength and free drainage
Metal foundry casting16/30Good permeability and refractoriness
Water filtration8/16, 16/30Uniform grains for effective filtering and backwashing
Glass manufacturing30/60Controlled size for even melting
Drymix mortar30/60, 30/100Consistent mix and finish

Coarse, medium, fine — what's the difference?

Coarse silica sand & gravel

Larger grains (gravel up to around 8/16). Used where strength, drainage and bulk matter — construction, structural fill and the coarse layers in filtration systems.

Medium silica sand

The most versatile band (around 16/30 to 40/100). This covers foundry, glass, drymix and many industrial uses. If you are unsure where to start, your need often falls here.

Fine silica sand & powder

Very fine grains and milled powders (50/100 up to 325 mesh). Used in ceramics, paints, coatings and specialty chemical applications where a smooth, fine material is essential.
